Scott Marshall, also known as LifeSize, released his latest single, "California Home," on September 12th, offering an insightful glimpse at his singer-songwriting abilities and what's important to him.
The somewhat melancholic alt pop-rock track reflects on the artist's deep connection and appreciation for his home state of California. "California Home" was inspired in part by the emotional aftermath of making it through a horrific wildfire: an experience that -- while devastating -- deepened his sense of gratitude for his home state.
Pulling inspiration from classic California acts such as The Beach Boys, as well as drawing from modern pop-rock influences like Maroon 5 and The Neighbourhood, Marshall himself along with Grammy-winning producer Dave Darling produced "California Home." The single is the fourth release leading up to his self-titled album, LifeSize, set to release on October 17th, 2025.
"'California Home' is a song I wrote in the wake of surviving a Southern California wildfire," said Marshall. "I was struggling with my love affair for California and wanted to write a personal, reflective, and observational song about what it means to me to be a Californian."
LifeSize's lyrics highlight the push and pull of emotions that come with life in California. Reflections such as "breaking waves" and "dreaming of golden sand and sea" indicate a deep yearning for familiarity. His tone is complemented by bright, melodic guitar work that brings the imagery to life, leaving the listener with a vivid feel of the West Coast.
Marshall grew up between households after his parents' divorce, constantly surrounded by a variety of sounds. At 14, he received his first guitar and realized he wasn't just a music lover, he was an artist. Raised in Seattle's creative music scene, he grew up listening to prominent artists like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. These influences shaped his electric sound, which he continues to develop in Los Angeles.
