The jazz tones here are mighty nice - on a record that sparkles with some of Buddy DeFranco's best music ever ! As with other Verve dates from the time, this DeFranco outing's got a rhythmic pulse that really gets things going - a sense of swing that's nice and lean, but quite powerful too - pushing Buddy past any cliched clarinet modes of the 50s, into a realm that really unlocks new sax-like sounds in his horn! The piano has a lot to do with the record - played here by either Kenny Drew or Sonny Clark - with bass from Milt Hinton or Gene Wright, and drums from Art Blakey and Bobby White. Titles include "Jack The Field Stalker", "Tenderly", "Yesterdays", "Lover Man", and "The Things We Did Last Summer".

If you're looking for the all-time number one purveyor of mainstream romantic soul, Smokey Robinson may well be the man, in the face of some towering competition. With the Miracles in the 1960s, he paced dozens of tuneful Motown hits with his beautiful high tenor. As a solo performer from the 1970s onward, he was one of the staples of urban contemporary music. But his singing gifts, as notable as they are, comprise only one of his hats: he's also one of pop's best and most prolific songwriters. Mute and Spoon release a 2CD set, compiling the work of Can founder Irmin Schmidt's solo and soundtrack work, including two unreleased Can remixes and a collection of soundtrack pieces personally compiled by long-term collaborator Wim Wenders. CD1 is a compilation of Irmin Schmidt's extensive work as a solo artist over the past 30 years. It is accompanied by sleeve notes by the English writer Duncan Fallowell, author of most lyrics on the album, whilst CD2 - selected and presented by the filmmaker Wim Wenders - is an insight into Schmidt's vast work as a composer for film and television for which Wenders has written extensive sleeve notes. The two CD compilation includes tracks such as 'Villa Wunderbar', 'Kick On The Floods' and 'Bohemian Step', alongside unreleased remixes by Schmidt of two Can tracks, 'Alice' and 'Last Night Sleep' and an unreleased extract from 'La Fermosa', a ballet by Youri Vamos, entitled Betes De Passage.

Vanguard Visionaries recycles ten previously released tracks taken from Siegel-Schwall's stint with the label in the mid- to late '60s. The band's original four albums are now deleted and have been replaced by compilations, the best being Where We Walked. Since most fans will no doubt already own this material, it appears to be marketed to the novice. With that in mind, it would have been useful to include some liner notes chronicling the band's history. The easily obtainable Complete Vanguard Recordings is the set to look for.
