Hailing from Nashville-adjacent Murfreesboro, TN, singer-songwriter Kristin Budde has released her latest single, "Regret."
The track is her first of 2025, and follows her October single, "Let Love Take The Lead." Both singles compliment her debut six-song EP, Begin Again, released in 2023. The EP reflects on loss and the alleviation of it, a theme threaded through "Regret."
The single opens with a melancholic guitar and the accompanying lyrics, "You've been tired of plundering and wrestling / Uncertain, worn down, and questioning." A similar uncertainty and fear plagues the melody: "Is the feeling in your chest regret? Oh, you'll never know." In these lyrics, Budde departs from the finishing note of Begin Again that inspires the resolution of such turbulent emotions.
"Regret" ponders its title, and how the feeling can hinder new beginnings, yet she's ready to leave the past behind. To close out the song, Budde sings in her powerful timbre, "You can start again / it doesn't have to end with regret." The number brings listeners to a similar finish to her previous work, following journeys of dealing with darkness and navigating uncertainty.
"It's easy to romanticize what we might have done differently in the past, but we have to trust that we did the best we could with what we knew," states Budde. She echoes the song's final chorus with a nod to her debut album, saying, "This song reminds us that no matter where we've been, we can always begin again." For that reason, her song concludes like a conversation between close friends: intimate and quietly moving.
"Regret" is a display of Budde's poignant lyricism, tender-hearted singing, and experience as both a seasoned musician and multi-instrumentalist.
"I wanted to express the idea that all we really have is this moment, right now," Budde reflects. And with that motivation to stay inspired in the present, she is working on her second album, slated to debut in 2026.
