Woke up early from leg cramps and a deep and abiding need to pee. When I walked out of the cabin the moon filtered through the cloud cover to turn everything silver. The reservoir, the oaks, the rocks, everything.
I went back to sleep and near sunup the rest of the camp stirred. There was Trail Magic over by the tent area and we checked it out while we formulated a plan for the day. The idea was to hike out and pull off another 20+ mile day. I was stiff and cramping, but felt like I could do it. The forecast was for snow and rain the following day.
Whammy got his cuppa and split with us, but Red Beard and Bhikkhu hung out for pancakes to fuel the climb up to Mount Laguna. Unfortunately for me I played glyphosate roulette and lost. I ate the better part of an otherwise delicious pancake and as soon as it got in proximity to my lower GI it made me bloated and uncomfortable.
The climb out of Lake Morena was gorgeous and this section of trail is in better shape than the section from Day 1. Most of the vegetation has been cut back preventing the transfer of Day 1's rain water to legs and pants. I wore nothing other than my running short all the same because most of my clothing was still pretty damp.
Earlier parts of the trail are lower desert but the bit just past interstate 8 climbs up significantly and the desert changes. Arbutus and sage give way to Pine and Black Oak groves.
We made it to Mount Laguna just past 7:00 pm and got into the hostel as the storm was picking up.
