I started late today because I still hadn't made my way to the Post Office. The good news is that the Campo mail room was open (at 8:30). I hitched a mile or so from CLEEF to there after repacking my stuff and then waited for the gate to open.
An ominous start
OnlyPaul and Papa Bear had breakfast ready for hikers leaving, but I skipped everything save a cuppa because pancakes and I don't mix so well. I was the last one out of CLEEF and the rain was picking up its tempo.
The good news is that I was fresh and ready so I ended up catching everyone who left earlier than I did that morning. I passed some day hikers too and an older fella named Ken from Australia who has a popped sleeping mat.
Interestingly, as I passed folks I also started to gain some walking friends. The rain really began to pick up around two-ish and some hikers peeled off for an early camp between mile 5 and 10. Myself and three others wanted to make Hauser Creek (-15) and had intended to call it a day there, but when we arrived the rain was pouring.
Reconsidering we collectively decided to climb out of the creek canyon. There were potential bailouts on the map but myself Triple Whammy, Red Beard, and Bhikkhu ended up walking to Lake Morena.
I was completely soaked as we were everyone else. Whammy called the station and got a cabin for himself and the three of us split number 6. The rest of the night was spent warming up, drying off and sleeping.
