A tender ode to lost love, Kiefer Luttrell's new single, "Spanish Streets," is a triumph of authenticity and heart in lyricism.
"Spanish Streets" gently settles in with soulful electric piano that dominates the mid-range of the track, flanked by a warm bass and the buttery glide of electric guitar. Luttrell's down to earth vocals relate the sense of feeling lost, isolated, and without direction when relationships fall through: "Cause no matter what I do / I can't fix what's wrong / Stranded out here / On these Spanish Streets alone," he croons.
While it's something he aims to leave in his past, Luttrell was a Green Beret in the Army, and wrote the song while on his second deployment in Spain. "The song is about the time surrounding before and after my second deployment," he states. "I remember walking the streets and alleys before eventually hopping back on the C-17 and going to Jordan. On the way back, I got stuck in Kuwait waiting on a plane to get me back home for a few days, which at that point, felt like a lifetime. So, I imagined that my wife today (I was single back then) was on the other end of that trip, and how much I know I would've wanted to fix that situation to get back to her sooner, but couldn't."
Luttrell's story is as blue collar and salt of the earth as it gets. He came of age working in factories of Iola, Kansas, where these experiences, paired with carpentry projects with his grandfather instilled a strong work ethic and deep connection to the American working-class –- a connection that continues to have a profound influence on his music.
It was his grandfather who gave him his first guitar and set him on a musical path that changed his life. These influences have had ripple effects across all his music, even down to his response to his position in relation to the modern country tropes: "[I just want to] create meaningful art until I have nothing else to say."
"Spanish Streets" is his first release of 2025, but only the beginning of his upcoming projects. His upcoming follow up single, "Somewhere Else," is set to be released in spring. Luttrell is also hard at work writing his third studio album. These projects follow a streak of productive years, which include his albums, These Great Plains (2022) and Sidewalk of the Universe (2023), along with last year's EP, Tall Tales and Dead End Roads.
Kiefer Luttrell aims to follow in the footsteps of his idols like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Sturgill Simpson and others, and is handily fulfilling his goals to create meaningful art. And if the last few years have any bearing on the future, he will continue to do so for years to come.
