DreamGood Untangles Fate and Friction on “Paris Novella”

There is a dizzying, tarot-deck logic running through DreamGood’s sprawling concept album, "Paris Novella". Formed in 2009, the cinematic art-pop trio Mitchell Sloan, Joshua Heath, and Glenn Heath have long inhabited the borderlands between dancefloors and private dream states. Here, they dive straight into the theater of divination, psychic static, and existential reckoning. The record behaves like a handful of eccentric confessions pulled at random from a stranger's trench coat, swinging violently between manic spectacle and devastating stillness.

On “Spaceman,” an early burst of electronic rock disguises cosmic mind invasion as a frantic alternative dance groove, its piercing crescendos mimicking a broadcast hijacked by an unseen frequency. That undercurrent of surveillance and paranoia boils over during “Psychic TV” and the industrial dissonance of “Kingdom of Fear,” confronting media saturation with mechanical tension. Elsewhere, the claustrophobia becomes deeply intimate: “Sex & Support” erupts into stuttering glitch-pop and erratic pitch shifts, capturing the volatile vertigo of two people dissolving into one another.

Yet the album earns its weight when the frantic noise recedes into bruised grandeur. The centerpiece, “Never Been to Paris,” frames romantic disillusionment against expansive synthpop swells, mourning the humiliation of being treated like scenic decor rather than an equal. “All the Animals” counters that sorrow with woozy, bedroom-pop gentleness, urging peace with one’s own darker, primal impulses. From the nocturnal liberation of “Ghost Letter” to the towering release of “Kings,” the record charts a jagged path out of psychological confinement before “Illuminate” pairs existential decay with bright, hypnotic staccato loops.

"Paris Novella" refuses to read your palm cleanly; instead, it leaves you wondering how much of your destiny was dictated by fate, and how much was decided on a crowded dance floor under flickering neon.
