Opus Kink’s long anticipated debut album completes the world of theatrical pandemonium they have developed over many years of constant work honing their sound and building their live reputation. After a run of singles that have only added to the anticipation, ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ proves well worth the wait.

Impossible to pin down, ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ pulls from the range of Opus Kink’s reference points, combining jazz, folk, country and a hint of electronic influences. Ultimately, the maximalism of their punk cabaret aesthetic remains the compelling core which ties these strands together. Working with producer Craig Silvey, the band have found a way to preserve their signature mayhem without letting it become overwhelming. The collision of genres feels purposeful, horns and synths in almost constant conversation with one another. The collaboration with fellow Brighton band The New Eves further enhances this blend, bringing together the electronic and folk elements that make ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ feel so experimentally ambitious

‘The Sweet Goodbye’ is a record that feels built for the burlesque atmosphere of Berlin’s Kit Kat Club. Opus Kink have always understood the power of performance, and the album’s strong cabaret influence sees lead singer Angus Rogers act less like a traditional frontman and more like an emcee. As the record unfurls, he shifts between ringmaster, storyteller and unreliable narrator. Tracks such as ‘I’m A Pretty Showboy’ highlight this theatrical side of the band, as Opus Kink welcome the larger-than-life characters that run throughout ‘The Sweet Goodbye’. They’re not simply performers delivering songs, instead inhabiting the characters they create and becoming a strange cast of lovers, sailors, cowboys and sinners. Each song feels like the next act in an increasingly confusing and unpredictable production, allowing Opus Kink to explore the darker and more absurd qualities of human behaviour while fully embracing the folly of the characters they have created.

From horn-driven floor-fillers to shanty-esque nautical ballads, every musical choice on ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ feels deliberate. Nothing is included simply for the sake of experimentation; instead, Opus Kink have learnt how to gather their influences and past legacy together with confidence. Each arrangement feels carefully considered, strengthening the album’s identity and cementing Opus Kink as one of the most distinctive bands in modern alternative music.

Beyond sound and theatricality, ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ exhibits a fascination with the uncomfortable sides of human nature; themes of desire run throughout the record, but they are rarely presented as simple or romantic. Instead, intimacy is significantly more unsettling, and affection is tangled with obsession, frustration and uncertainty. This tension can often be captured through lyrics, as in ‘Come Over, Do Me Wrong’ where the line between pleasure and pain is blurred as lyrics question where one ends and the other begins. The phrase “distinguish my boredom from pain” encapsulates the album’s fascination with dissatisfaction and the search for meaning within moments of emptiness.

‘The Sweet Goodbye’ feels like the pinnacle of the world Opus Kink have been building throughout their many years as a band. From their unruly live reputation – which over the years has turned songs like ‘St. Paul of the Tarantulas’ into fan favourites – to their refusal to sound like anyone else, the album embodies the ambition and imagination that has earned them such a devoted following. Rather than feeling like a conclusion, ‘The Sweet Goodbye’ feels like a glimpse into an exciting future for Opus Kink.
