Bringing his signature grit and alt-rock aura to the 3rd and Lindsley stage this past Sunday night, EG Vines delighted audience members performing his new album, Kaleidoscope Dream. |
Presented by Lightning 100 and airing live on the radio, Vines’ had been waiting all year for this moment. From the life-altering trials and tribulations experienced throughout the making of the album, to its long awaited release, Vines can finally exhale. |
Above the crowd chatter played “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles, as well as “All You Need is Love,” which was fitting, as Lightning 100 DJ Brother Love soon took the stage to introduce Vines and company. Before he could get to the introduction though, he had to make mention of the big Knicks victory as a New York native, and talk shit about Philly sports fans to boot. He eventually got down to brass tacks. |
Before long, Vines — with his six-piece band in tow — would leave no stoned unturned with their dialed-in performance. |
Playing the album from start to finish, he kicked things off with his tender piano-led number “Hello in There.” This eased folks in with its light melody and heartfelt lyrics. |
The energy would pick up with “Gun for a Mouth,” his lead single for the new album, which hit streaming in February, and eventually melted into “Maserati Grin,” his follow-up St. Patrick’s Day single. I had a bird’s eye view in the balcony for the first few songs, noting a number of head bobs and groovers come to life with this track. |
One of those life-altering moments for Vines was the birth of his two songs, to whom the fifth track on his album, “One Day,” is dedicated to. The emotion and tenderness in the song was palpable, and it’s a sweet ode to his next of kin that they can share forever. |
After delivering the title track — which was his April single — and “I Like ’em Braindead,” his final May single, Vines made note of the ups and downs of the album. “It’s a real roller coaster of a record,” he said, noting the stark contrasts between the heavy grunge nature of the previous track and back into the delicate soundscapes of “Soft.” |
Things got serious when the band left the stage, and Vines mentioned the tough few years he’s had, which included losing his father in November. “I dedicate this show to my dad, Dr. Troy Vines,” he stated, before receiving a round of applause that led into the final track of the album, “Worried About the Ones I Love.” |
While the album portion of the show concluded, Vines and crew would go on to rip off OG EG Vines numbers, including his hit song, “The Salesman.” |
Vines is a songwriter and performer who holds nothing back, and lets the power within him take control. It’s evident why his fans show up and show out for his live performances, and this was no different. |
“Each song on this record conveys a depth of feeling,” Vines stated. “The album’s journey represents shifting colors, patterns, and perspectives in one’s life, potentially opening a door to transformational personal change.” It was produced by Dan Hannon outside of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, along with Jimbo Hart on bass, and the late Tim Very on drums. |
His debut album, Family Business (2019), came out swinging, earning attention from NPR, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, Billboard, and numerous other outlets. Vines built on that momentum with the atmospheric alt-rock follow-up, Through the Mirror (2021), as he and his band amassed 100+ tour dates across the U.S. |
His 2023 album, Dance Moves, brought AAA and college radio airplay for the single “Over The Sun,” and another national tour in support. With Kaleidoscope Dream, EG Vines and his band look to continue to push boundaries both sonically and on stage. |
