Kicking things off is the eye-opening title, “The Dead King Hunts And Eats The Gods,” which begins the album with a killer instrumental introduction before vocals come in around 00:35. |
Harmonica, guitar, and drums combine in a fun, foot-stomping beat. The song feels like a flash to the past with its use of 50s and 60s elements. Verse two sings, “On top of his head he wears a crown made of snakes / Got two sets of eyes so he’s always awake / Oh, oh,” displaying the bizarre theme created within the song. |
Coming in at number four, “Yellow Bird,” is an upbeat tune that reminds listeners of an Elvis Presley-style number. Vocal inflections that Sedgewick uses throughout the verse, alongside the overall tempo are what work together to create the throwback vibe. Throughout the entire song, lyrics like “I heard a yellow bird singin’ this morning / Wait, I think I see my love / Turns out he was high cause his wing wasn’t workin’ yeah,” can be heard. |
Moving along to song seven, “Paper Birds” slows down the speed of the album a tad. The lyrics are considerably more spread out in comparison to the preceding tracks, giving space for the simplicity of the instrumentation used in the background. |
Wrapping things up is track ten, “Splice.” It is a very mellow and bluesy tune with heavy guitar emphasis. Overall, the project is diverse in its elements, but keeps a sonically similar theme throughout. |
Sedgewick states, “My goal is to continue to write, play, and perform music that is sincere, meaningful, provocative and challenging. Music that is sad and happy and human. Music that is familiar yet not quite anything you have heard before. I am always in search of the unexpected inevitable.” |
His new album, The Lonesome Tender Hollow Of The Night, accomplishes that goal easily with its recognizable rhythms and unique lyricism. He and his band can be seen on the road this summer at the locations below. |
