Since the release of her last EP, Genovieve has sharpened her storytelling as she takes listeners on a vulnerable journey through change and loss on her latest EP, Slow Down.
Slow Down is a four song compilation of somber reflection Genovieve had done within the comforts of nature. Writing from her most heartbroken place, the songwriter processed her emotions via the creation of these songs. Full of delicate acoustic guitar and references to the world around her, this EP is Genovieve's most bittersweet.
Slow Down opens with the most loving track, "National Park." The song is set up with intimate guitar strums and gentle storytelling of falling in love with nature. For portraying an innocent narrative, Genovieve's vocals radiate a courageous maturity, showing that she reminisces on past moments with gratitude. Listeners start to feel the energy shift from love to despair as the EP progresses.
Just as the title "Fool" implies, Genovieve alludes that she does not feel proud of her past actions when she refers to herself as such in the opening line. She later calls out, "You have to love me less / Yet I love you just the same," illustrating the imbalance of love she once experienced. Sonically, this track stands out from the preceding song due to its lively acoustic guitar paired with somber cello sounds. The contrast between the guitar and cello ignites a fire of emotion to what could have been just another sad song.
Genovieve's airy vocals and harmonies shine on the third track of the EP, "Next Time." This song seems to be about a heartbreaking loss, and maybe even regret, as Genovieve repeats "I just know I won't let go next time" at the end of the chorus. She continues her theme of vulnerability as she admits "I just want to wish away this time / But I'm scared."
Closing with a more melancholy tone than how it started, the title track is filled with wistful, nature-based metaphors. "Love is a meadow / And grief is the wind," is a recurring comparison that comes up. To add, Genovieve sings with the most emotion on "Slow Down" than any other track of the EP. "Please for me / Slow down," she begs with gloom.
With clear themes of heartbreak and loss on each track, Genovieve ensured Slow Down still had a shape to its listening experience, ending different than it started. Playing shows across the country, she continues to navigate constant change in her life the best way she knows how -- through song.
