Tender-hearted singer-songwriter Theo Kandel has shared his deeply vulnerable new EP, Somewhere Along The Trail, Vol. 2.
This brief but mighty three-track collection of songs soothes the soul while leaving an emotional imprint. Kandel's lyrics are softhearted yet impactful, and his stripped-back style allows his raw and heart-wrenching imagery to shine without distraction.
The opening track, "Stupid Funny Limbo," begins with a beautifully intricate fingerpicking pattern that carries through the entire tune, creating a steady, organic, and instantly memorable melody.
Kandel not only tells the story of the uncertainty of relationships, but also captures all the feelings that come with that uncertainty, battling the inner conflict of trying to make light of the situation and reminiscing about good memories, while also facing the reality that it might be over. " I don't know what's going to happen / I'm all shaken up / Cause I've been tripping over my heels / Sliding headfirst into love." These chorus lyrics sum up the picture painted by Kandel in this tune.
"1952 Vincent Black Lightning" hits the nail on the head when it comes to yearning for a love you previously had. "And now I'm 21 years / I might make 22 / And I don't mind dying / But for the love of you." Those words hit softly, but leave a lasting weight after the tune finishes. Kandel's storytelling is direct, and there's no need to unravel metaphors or overanalyze his meaning as he makes it easy for listeners to relate his words to their own experiences in love.
Lastly, we land on the final track, "Leroy's Song". Though all of the tunes on this EP lead with softness, this one comes across as the most tender. This heartfelt piece seems deeply personal to Kandel, the kind of story that has nestled into his own heart and will surely find the soft spot in the listener's heart.
With just an acoustic guitar and a delicate but full-bodied voice, the New York songwriter draws listeners in effortlessly, guiding them with the quiet strength through his emotional terrain. While his songs may be gentle and airy, they pack a powerful punch.
Kandel's music will touch the hearts of those who listen, making them view love in many different ways through his storytelling. He invites those to experience the thrill of falling in love, the comfort of being in love, and the heartache of falling out of love. His words are deeply human and honest, leaving a lasting, heartfelt impression -- and such is the case on Somewhere Along The Trail, Vol. 2.
