In singer-songwriter Hallie Marie's summery new single, "3:59," life is about the journey, not the destination.
An electric guitar trills like a songbird at the start of the song, adding a quivering edge to the half-melancholy half-uplifting piano chord progression, soon followed by Marie's honeyed vocals. She plunges listeners into the ocean with her first line, "Under the waves I've got a perfect view / So many shapes and ways to be blue." Like a plane lifting off from the runway, the rest of the song takes listeners on an expansive journey inspired by her adventurous summers abroad in Spain and Berlin.
One can imagine a bedroom wall decorated with Polaroid snapshots of bright, colorful vacation memories as Marie sings, "Streelights, long nights, singing in parking lots / Moonlight, high tide, going out with makeup on." But, like all trips, the inevitable goodbye adds a tinge of said melancholy and nostalgia. "3:59, I catch my flight / I'm going home, going home tonight," she croons. "4:05, I lose my mind / I'm high above, coming down this time."
Despite the sadness of departure, the song never loses its sweetness. "How could I want more from this life?" Marie asks, accompanied by piano that swells like the ocean's tides, light and joyful. The guitar work, engineered by Andreas Landeck, is full of yearning, echoing the heartfelt emotions of the song.
Marie started off making music with the Denver-based band Direville, whose Americana and funk-infused style draws inspiration from Colorado's iconic Western landscape. Now, making waves on her own as a solo artist, her affinity for storytelling has created a space where pop, rock, and folk influences can mingle and create something unique and fresh.
Her genre-blending sound draws inspiration from emotive indie musicians like Sufjan Stevens and Phoebe Bridgers. Marie hopes to "connect deeply with her listeners, sharing meaningful ideas that resonate long after the music ends."
"3:59," which came out on July 2nd, is Marie's fourth single release of 2025. She is currently in the studio working on upcoming releases, and plans to schedule show dates for later this year.
