With her latest single, "Will You Hold My Arms Up?," singer-songwriter Lora Kelley returns to her passion with a raw and soothing exploration of support, faith, and resilience.
The track is set to appear on her forthcoming release, Where I Am Now, and continues her tradition of weaving personal healing into poetic musical expression.
"Will You Hold My Arms Up?" brings feelings of meditation and relaxation from the get go. Its gentle tone is like a hymn, underscoring her relations to her faith. As someone who lives on a farm in North Garden, Virginia, Kelley is devoted when it comes to her links to the church, especially in recent years and throughout her process with this single.
Within the release, it portrays God as a friend, someone who is present and can easily reach out to Kelley. Even without the religious undertones, there are ways to interpret the song as close friends or someone extremely trustworthy. Composition-wise, the instrumentals match the message, with a piano holding the foundation as the base melody.
Kelley is no stranger to complex emotional terrain. Many of her works are often drawn from her own journey through trauma and restoration. In addition to a music career, she is a certified practitioner and coach at Allender Center for Narrative-Informed Trauma Care. She opened up about her life through her social media accounts, mainly Instagram, and her podcast, The Storied Living. In 2021, Kelley released her album Domystique, continuing to hold space for the impact and ambiguous grief surrounding spiritual neglect.
Along with Kelley, Jeremy Casella contributed as the producer of the track. Kelley expresses her gratitude in her promotional post on Instagram, crediting him for "bringing together the most amazing musicians to hold the emotionality of this record."
