Husband & Wife Folk Duo Kyra And Tully Long For The Simpler Things On Latest EP 'Songs For The Universe'

By Beatrice McDermott on June 29, 2025

Mornings start with freshly-brewed tea and icy rain tapping against the windows in Songs for the Universe, a cozy release by husband-and-wife folk duo Kyra & Tully.

Country life in Prince Edward County, Ontario, inspired Kyra & Tully to create their sixth studio release, a five-track EP that came out on June 21st, 2025. The couple have been part of Canada's folk/Americana scene since the early aughts, and are known for their dreamy vocals, gentle melodies, and musings on the human condition.

Their February single, "Deer In The Headlights," was written after the couple settled down in Prince Edward, where they said they initially struggled "with feelings of isolation and despair." The transition had a silver lining, though, as it led to Kyra and Tully writing the EP's first single, a meditative song that the couple describes as being about "frozen in a state between fight and flight."

As the title suggests, the singers feel like they're "getting pulled into the glare," stuck in place by a fear-inducing force. But the lyrics, "Smile with the sun / In the shadows, fear follows / It's not fooling anyone," remind the listener that fear is temporary, quickly banished by daybreak.

Their second track and March single, "On The Farm," is a window into the time Kyra and Tully spent on their friend's tranquil biodynamic farm. Accompanied by mellow acoustic guitar and piano, the singers profess, "I like living on the farm the best," before guiding listeners through scenes of a typical workday, starting with "Fed the dogs, let the cat out" and "Replacing the hay / It's how we start each morning and end each day." Snapshots of drinking coffee in the morning and watching the animals rove around the forest invoke nostalgia for simpler times.

"Dreams realized, chains no longer bind," proclaims the singers in the upbeat tune, "Voices Of Leaders," which brims with peppy organ and accordion. The cycles of nature and life are deeply linked in this song; the "first frost of the season" sends the singers on a journey of introspection, while later, an ethereal chorus declares, "We are a magnetic force / Beams of light, beacons of love / In love with the laws of the universe." The listeners are led to wonder who the "leaders" are in this song-- community activists, forces of nature, or a harmonious mix of both.

Songs For the Universe marks Kyra and Tully's sixth studio release. Co-produced by David James Allen and mastered by Martin Davis Kinack, the EP is a sonic journey that blends roots and pop melodies with heartfelt lyricism. With layers of emotion, wonder, and gratitude, this release reaffirms Kyra and Tully's signature storytelling—both intimate and expansive.

Kyra and Tully will be performing on their home turf of Prince Edward this summer.
