With a raw approach from a certified vibe technician, dwn bad has released their new EP, Good Luck Have Fun, on June 20th. An indie alt-rock project pioneered by Derek Silva, the EP showcases and embraces the imperfections of instrumental lines and raw vocals.
In the dawn of artificial intelligence, dwn bad roots itself with the belief that songs from the heart, soul, and fingertips should be genuine, and recorded accordingly. Many of the sonic choices that dwn bad took, which are showcased on their YouTube channel, add truth and desirable DIY aesthetic to Silva's musical direction.
The Houston artist's behind-the-scenes video shows the personal attachment that Silva has to this project, in its musicality and the aura of its themes. This aura seeps into the video itself, as the filming was done in a recording studio, and the overall production of the EP is happening in his basement, as shown in the video.
Good Luck Have Fun's second track, "Run Around" is a great example of this, as it starts with a grunge guitar and a straight ahead bass line, driving the momentum of the song.
Silva's fuzzed-out vocals add to the DIY garage rock aesthetic, and is very much in a Julian Casablancas/The Strokes vein. It creates a delightfully nostalgic tone and energy, which carries on throughout the EP. Lyrically "Run Around" seems to touch on the stream of thoughts when it comes to a lie, or even a white lie, mainly in a relationship, and/or trying to break off that relationship.
"Liar Liar (Talk to Me)" keeps with epic guitar riff energy, this time with heavy drums introducing the song, but carries a more psychedelic vibe in the chorus. The eclectic vibe helps convey the desire of being lied to, whether it's by someone else or to oneself.
"Love on Repeat" is an epic close to the album, creating a response or revelation that sometimes happens as a late-night thought. The driving guitar and post-punk energy is fierce yet reserved, and magnetizes with Silva's continued vocal effects. It harnesses a desire to be on someone's side even after all the troubles or lies that occurred throughout the relationship, bringing the messaging of "Run Around", "Liar Liar (Talk to Me)", and the other songs on the EP full circle.
Dwn bad's EP Good Luck Have Fun is their first, and follows their previous singles in "So Loud For a Leaf" and "Palace of You."
