Whittled down from the 25-strong shortlist, these finalists all earn a slot at the festival, with the competition's winners opening the main stage this August.

Every year, the Green Man Rising competition provides a welcome opportunity for up-and-coming artists to shoot their shot and win a slot to perform at one of the UK's most treasured alternative music festivals, which this year runs from 14-17th August. Whittled down from a record-breaking 4000 applicants to a long list of 25, the final 5 names were judged by a panel of industry experts, including ourselves here at Hard of Hearing.
Among those shortlisted this year are a brace of London-based artists who are no strangers to the picturesque Welsh festival site. First up, trip-hop instrumentalists wing!, an act we initially encountered this January via the annual Slow Dance compilation, and who we are excited to have performing on our stage at The Great Escape later this month. The next shortlisted act also happens to be an alumni of Slow Dance's plenteous roster, London singer/songwriter Sarah Meth, whose poignant and vulnerable Steps EP we celebrated with open arms.
Leading the line for the Welsh grassroots on the bill are anthemic indie-janglists Shale, fresh off the back of the release of their self-titled debut EP this April. The delicate strains of Liverpool shoegazers a Lesser Version introduce another dynamic new 'one-to-watch' while more delicate still, the spellbinding indie-folk of Newcastle duo (and Fire Talk-signees) Lots of Hands rounds off the shortlist.
All 5 acts will be performing at the festival this August, but only one winner will earn the prestigious honour of opening the main stage, succeeding 2024 victors The Orchestra (For Now) to the accolade. The final winner will be decided in Cardiff at a special live show at Clwb Ifor Bach on 20th May, hosted by 6 Music's Huw Stephens.
