Documenting the 2025 General elections at Punggol GRC with the Leica Q3

By Keith Wee on May 4, 2025

On 3 May 2025, Singapore entered polling day, concluding 9 days of campaigning across the island nation by the 11 political parties and 2 independents.

As the rallies unfurled, I found myself amidst the vibrant tapestry of democracy, and the article today is simply a visual journey documenting the rallies held at Punggol GRC by the two competing parties - the incumbent People's Action Party and the challenger, the Workers' Party.

My writing will be sparse this round, taking care not to leave any comments that might be construed as being politically leaning towards any side and instead preferring to let the photos do the talking through a documentation of the two rallies held by competing political parties for Punggol GRC.

Choice of Equipment

I could have, like many others, brought along a full system with a breadth of telephoto and ultra-wide lenses to capture close-ups of the candidates on stage to the crowds, but I decided to simply bring the Leica Q3 instead.

Leica Q3

Compact, equipped with a 60 megapixels full-frame sensor paired with the Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens with relatively fast and reliable autofocus, this combination along with the built in crop modes giving me frames equivalent to a 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 75mm would work for documenting moments that would define our nation's future.

The atmosphere was electrifying at moments, and most of all, everyone looked out for each other despite the venue reaching full capacity within the first hour of the three-hour rally.

If I were to use the words inspiring and emotional to describe the Worker's Party rally, the People's Action Party rally would be described as clinical and neat.

A much calmer, collected and more homogenous profile of supporters in comparison, with everything more towards well-rehearsed than spontaneous.

As events extended into the night, the Q3's prowess in low-light conditions became evident. High ISO performance remained impressively clean, and the dynamic range allowed for nuanced captures of scenes illuminated by streetlights and mobile screens. The silent shutter was a bonus, too, allowing me to take close-ups.

Conclusions.

The Leica Q3 isn't merely a tool; it's a storyteller. Through its lens, I witnessed the convergence of tradition and progress, the collective hopes of the people of Singapore, and the silent strength of its people. While its fixed 28mm lens required me to move closer, to engage more deeply, it also taught me the value of perspective, with the digital crops allowing my framing, which otherwise wouldn't be possible.

At the end, when the results were released, Punggol GRC was won by the People's Action Party with 55.17% of votes (63589 votes), beating the 51663 votes in support of the Workers' Party team.

Thank you for reading.
