The roots rock Americana collective known as West Texas Exiles has dropped their latest single, "What Happened." The track is a wistful, slow-burning follow up to "Circles in the Yard," their first release of the year.
The band is a convergence of West Texas voices: singer-songwriters Marco Gutierrez, Daniel Davis, and Colin Gilmore -- who also handles bass and production -- rounded out by drummer Trinidad Leal. Though hailing from the rugged sprawl of West Texas, the band came together in Austin, where they've been carving out a distinct, dust-kicked sonic lane since 2022.
Their sound leans into the lineage of acts like The Flatlanders with a heavy influence of iconic fellow Texan Buddy Holly, while pulling threads from modern touchstones like Jason Isbell and Vampire Weekend. All of these distinct influences create a blend that feels both familiar and quietly subversive within Americana's often well-tread paths.
"What Happened" is a bit of a melancholic, subtly anthemic ballad: part campfire catharsis, part late-night confession. The track finds the band at their most vulnerable, with an intimate live session recorded at Boot Shot Sessions that captures the emotional undercurrent in full bloom. "What happened to you? What happened to you," they repeat, harmonies folding into a gentle crescendo of steel, reverb, and restraint.
Since forming, West Texas Exiles have quickly built their momentum, earning slots at SXSW and Willie Nelson's Luck Reunion, and garnering a reputation across their home state. Their debut EP, 2023's Volume I, arrived to critical praise and hinted at the staying power of the group. With accolades like the 2022 International Songwriters Award in the Americana category already under their belt, the band are proving that style of Texas roots music doesn't have to be stuck in the past to feel timeless.
The band's debut full-length album, 8,000 Days, is slated for release September 12, 2025.
