We had a great time over the weekend throwing a party at Sebright Arms with three of our favourite new live acts: Blood Wizard, ladylike and Truthpaste (Unlucky sadly had to drop out). A sunny Spring afternoon dissipated into a roaring night in the tucked-away pub/venue, where we invited people through the upstairs throng of birthday parties and merry Crystal Palace fans into the venue's cavernous basement, adorned with black and green balloons for the occasion.
Manchester group Truthpaste kicked things off with a set full of surprises, guided by well-selected samples, sax and violin hooks and lyrics packed with whimsical personality, culminating in the band's addictive debut single 'See You Around'. The decision to let the deputy guitarist take the mic between songs was bold but went remarkably well.
ladylike create such a rich sound for a four-piece… a four-piece with three guitarists at that! In a set that has evolved since we last caught them around Christmas, the newer songs seem to express a new degree of compositional subtlety, with each build, each change of chord, creating a powerful shift in mood.
Headliner Blood Wizard then brought forth a set worthy of the festival atmosphere of the night. Along with airings of a few exciting new songs, some recent favourites had the crowd singing along, from the emotive 'sciencefiction' to the churning 'Big Fish', which drew an enthusiastic roar of "Wait!" as it kicked into its chorus. Hazel Blacher was on hand to capture the sights of the evening, from the debut of our fresh new banner to the storming final set. We can't wait to do it all again for our collaboration with The Great Escape at the official Pre-Party on 7th May…
The fresh new banner in question.
