Following her undergraduate studies, Helen moved to Lincoln and completed two post-baccalaureate years in the UNL actuarial science program, where she accepted an internship at Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. This internship led to a full-time position as an actuary in the Group Insurance Department, where she has been working ever since – now specializing in Paid Family & Medical Leave product pricing.
After a 7-year journey of sitting for actuarial exams (10 in total), Helen achieved Fellowship status and was officially inducted as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in the fall of 2024.
She believes her experience as a music student at UNO provided her with an invaluable skillset that contributed to her success as an actuary. In music, only productive practice truly matters - much like the focused preparation required for actuarial exams. Additionally, both disciplines demand an honest assessment of your current standing and a well-defined vision for the future. Lastly, music provides a powerful outlet for stress relief, helping to ease the pressures of work and life when they become overwhelming and difficult to navigate.
Helen and her husband now reside in Bellevue, NE where she spends her free time gardening, cooking, and playing piano. Her post-exam passion project has been sight reading her way through the International Library of Music - Piano Compositions – The University Society, an 8-volume set of piano works which she picked up for a whopping $10 at a local estate sale!
