Christo Sedgewick and The Fabulous Regrets offer a timeless sound that casts a wide net to music fans of all kinds.
The group's debut LP, Bright are the Days, is a delightful if not stunning entrance onto the scene, and hit streaming services this January. The 10-track collection showcases their heartfelt songwriting with anthemic, organic arrangements that aim to feed the soul.
With this humanistic ethos, Bright are the Days is a captivating release, beginning with "Always Gone." This opening number delivers gorgeous uplifting acoustic instrumentation coupled with lyrically gut-wrenching lines reflecting on loss and longing. "Every morning when I wake up without you / It breaks my heart wide open / All over again / I just want it to end," he sings to open the song and album, again with an overall feeling of hope despite the words.
Coming in at number three is "Birthday Song," which opens with a very slow and lonesome acoustic guitar picking before crashing into an anthemic full band sound around the 1:10 mark. It displays an extremely tender and vulnerable side to Sedgewick and company, spilling at the seams with raw emotion.
"Lament," which clocks in as their most streamed track on Spotify, has a smooth driving blues-like groove that pairs with a haunting, rich tone equip with complimentary keys that lift the track. Sedgewick's vocals shine in this track overtop the unique guitar riff driving the song.
Another notable track, "Morning Comes," is both uplifting & raw, using an essence of hope in this driving anthem. "You will be my hired gun / Oh the lives we could make / Flowing on a river of time and space," Sedgwick sings.
Wrapping things up at number ten, "Sunset Lighting" is the cathartic finale, bringing it all back home through his poignant storytelling and defiance.
With idols and influences like Neil Young, Tom Waits, and Pink Floyd among others, Bright are the Days delivers flashes of these classic influences. Offering his talents of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Sedgewick showcases his sophisticated style through precise lyricism and melodic decoration.
"My earliest and greatest influences, musical and otherwise, were my parents," he relays in his website bio. "I remember using my pinky finger to wind the tape back into my father's Bob Dylan Infidels cassette and listening to Jokerman and Sweetheart Like You over and over."
Chriso Sedgewick and The Fabulous Regrets are hitting the road this year with dates in major cities such as Boston, Portland, Seattle, Chicago and more. Their sound is polished with sharp lyrics, delicate vocals, and a range of musical palettes for many walks of life. Of the new album, Sedgwick says, "It is rock. It is folk. It is roots. It is dirt. It is music for humans, from humans."
