Mason Via's new single, "Fireball," daringly fuses a country ballad with unbridled bluegrass spirit.
"Fireball" weaves a tale of a reckless individual who is balanced by his coolheaded partner. She is described throughout the song as "hands on the breaks" and his "north star," both symbols of guidance and safety.
In the chorus, he is described as "a fireball, half crazy," a symbol that may seem contradictory –- a fireball is typically not able to be constrained or guided –- but works, nonetheless. Similarly to this contradiction, the track balances the cool country swing that dominates throughout with a high-energy bluegrass break about halfway through the track. This fusion serves to reflect the dynamic lyrically present, and works just as well.
The accompanying video explores this relationship visually, cutting between Via performing the song and a couple demonstrating the dynamic present in the lyrics. As one of characters, the "fireball," attempts to drive home drunk, his recklessness is stopped by his lover, who steps in to drive him where he needs to go. The video ends as they part ways, his hat left in the car serving as a promise that they will meet again soon.
Mason Via
Raised on the border of Virginia and North Carolina, Via has never been a stranger to bluegrass. From a young age, his natural talent shone through his vocal, guitar, and mandolin skills, which won him regional competitions as a teenager.
After being tabbed as the youngest member of Old Crow Medicine Show in 2021, he toured the world, was nominated for a Grammy Award for his contributions to the group's album Jubilee, and released his debut solo album, New Horizons. His latest singles, each showcasing his dynamic string and vocal abilities in the bluegrass and country arena, are building up to the songwriter's second album, which is self-titled and set to release April 25th, 2025 on Mountain Fever Records.
We got to see Via perform with his band at The Station Inn in Nashville earlier this year, and his stellar studio work is only to be outmatched by his live performance. With a humble and passionate disposition, he exudes charm coupled with his top tier musical prowess, again with the help of his bandmates. His live show delivers that down-home, feel-good Appalachian music vibe he grew up with.
