After reinventing their sound over the course of several years, The Midnight Purchase brought their melodious soul n' roots-rock sound back in 2023, with the release of their last single, "All I Can Do."
In 2024, the band was hard at work piecing together songs for what will be their debut full-length LP, and now, they're on the home stretch.
Having recently signed with Spectra Music Group, The Midnight Purchase is on pace to release Young/Naïve later this year. Singles to be expected beforehand include "Too Proud," followed by "Good Days." Regarding the latter single -- which has a TBD release date -- lead singer and songwriter Orlando Peña stated, "[The song] is about deciding to stop running from your problems, and finally making changes to better your mental health and day to day quality of life."
Peña's lyricism is honest and delightful, keeping it real for listeners to relate to, as evidenced in "All I Can Do." The bouncy, rich drums and a killer electric guitar lick immediately kickstart the tune. The dark, low-pitched bass and sharp yet dreamy keyboard complete the song's multidimensional quality from start to finish.
With a head-nodding melody and gravelly vocals," All I Can Do" reflects on the idea that "You gotta do what you gotta do" to get through life. No matter what decisions you make, you will learn something from it.
The Midnight Purchase formed in 2018 when Peña unexpectedly returned to Milwaukee. Eager to find bandmates, he made a simple Craigslist posting which started the band's first iteration. After the band's first EP release in 2019, they gained traction and some local nominations, such as "New Artist of the Year" by WAMI, and won the "Folk Band of the Year" award by The Shepherd Express Best of Milwaukee.
Once COVID hit in 2020, Peña was allowed to work on reimagining what he wanted to create around his music. After playing local shows and correlating the sound for himself, he recruited the current lineup of bandmates: Jake Stranzer (lead guitarist), Jake Williams (piano/vocals), Marshall Holms (bass/vocals), and Lee Gray (percussion).
Upon the return of The Midnight Purchase and their upcoming album Young/Naïve, surely we can expect more catchy and melodic roots rock numbers that stir the soul.
