Kat Velasco has been pursuing avenues to captivate an audience her whole life.
Her latest avenue is that of a country pop singer, to which she's just released her latest single, "Paper Boy," a self-proclaimed "anti-love anthem." The South Carolina native's journey from pageant queen, to finance professional, and eventually Nashville artist is the evolution of someone who has always sought to push herself.
Velasco announced her latest single "Paper Boy" on Valentine's Day, stating in her social media, "What better way to celebrate valentine's day than releasing an anti-love anthem?" The track is a catchy anthem about something that's simply too good to be true, and merely an illusion. "My first name looks good with your last / Some things they never last / They just look good on paper, boy / You just look good on paper, boy," she sings in the chorus, reflecting on the fantasy of what could be.
Velasco grew up surrounded by performance and creativity, as her mother was a singer and her brother a professional dancer and choreographer. She too would get enraptured in that world, thriving in musical theater and the stage itself. By 2019, she had chose to leave the stage behind her for a job in finance. When the pandemic hit and the world was forced to recalibrate, she began channeling her life back into music, using her soulful voice to write songs through her journal entries.
Her introduction to the music world included her tracks like "Shania" and "Go Away," both of which garnered radio play and placements on notable Spotify's editorial lists. She also performed as the opening act for artists like Love and Theft, BRELAND, and David Nail.
Her prior single, 2024's "Burning Man," represents a new kind of sound she's been aiming for. She says the process of creating that song and it coming to life reminded her of "why she moved to Nashville."
Velasco has recently performed at festivals alongside stars like Megan Moroney, Jon Pardi, and Chase Rice among others. With her unwavering drive and knack for crafting catchy songs, the sky's the limit for this young singer-songwriter.
