Inspired by folk greats like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, Hemma is a guitar-wielding, pastoral princess of the ballad.
With palpable lyrics about love without bounds and conquering ancestral addiction, Hemma is unafraid to draw from her heritage. A lifetime of singing with her family's band, The Hebl Family Singers, has honed her Midwestern charm and honest lyrical approach.
On the wings of her forthcoming album, Abalone Sky, comes the artist's latest single, "Homebody." In true Hemma fashion, it pays homage to the Los Angeles music scene of the 60s and 70s, rich with melodic pop-rock and folk influences. Like her sound, her message is timeless: in a world full of reasons to divide ourselves, we must choose to stand together.
"This song was born of a world turned on its head," says Hemma. "During the pandemic, there was an abundance of time to reflect on the systems that program our gender divide." Directed by Jesse Johnson, the accompanying music video points to the harmony and beauty of nature, specifically that of Midwestern America. Walking amongst our country's heartland, Hemma's voice beckons listeners to find an even deeper meaning, beyond the polarizing concepts of power and politics.
Bursting with an impressive arrangement of instrumentation, "Homebody" showcases the talents of Ben Lester (keyboards), Sean Carey (drums), and Jeremy Boettcher (upright bass). Alongside her own lilting tones, Hemma shines on electric guitar. The poignant lyric, "You and I aren't as different as we seem / They'll pull us apart so easily," seems to sum up what she wants listeners to take away from the tune.
The single is Hemma's second from Abalone Sky, following her 2024 release in "Lullabies." Set for release in early 2025, the album will be Hemma's debut full-length release. The project was co-produced with Sean Carey and Brian Joseph in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
