With an unwavering approach to his own sonic creation and expression, composer and visual artist Mark "The Ram" O'Donnell continues to venture into the waters of a genre-bending classic rock-based sound.
O'Donnell is known to write from a place of ancestral memories and existential musings, letting physical places and sensations inspire his craft. His latest introspective yet unflinching track, "Unbound," was his last of a busy year for him, hitting streaming services the first week of December.
A powerful song about breaking free of expectations and just simply living life as it comes, "Unbound" takes a no-holds-barred approach to both instrumentation and lyricism. Written during the pandemic, it's no surprise that a dream of living free and untethered flowed effortlessly from O'Donnell's pen. He wasted no time in putting the full piece together, as both melody and message came to him rather quickly.
Released alongside the single is a purely instrumental version of the track. Compositionally, this is a rather soulful piece of music, one that can stand alone to create its own impressively curated sound. There is also a music video for the track, one that O'Donnell originally had bigger plans for, and yet, the finished product effectively delivers that "unbound", nomadic feel of the West Coast he's been known to savor in his work.
Like the lyrics suggest, the melody feels all around you at once, enveloping and engulfing. There is a permeating feel of omniscience and strength in the face of trials, reflected in both the melody and his stirring narrative. Echoing repeatedly is the idea: "I am nowhere, I am everywhere/ I am free, I'm unbound."
When he's not writing his own music, the SoCal-based artist plays with local musicians in Carlsbad where he currently lives. Raised in the Pennsylvania Rust Belt, The Ram's musical influences span multiple genres including classic rock, with hints of soul and funk.
