In an effort to raise funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, The 5 Spot in East Nashville is hosting the 19th Annual Get Behind The Mule Tom Waits Tribute show this Friday December 6th, 2024.
Hosted by notable Waits disciple and local songsmith Afton Wolfe along with Tommy Womack, the event will see a swath of Nashville talent grace The 5 Spot stage delivering what's sure to be some rollicking renditions of the iconic songwriter's tunes.
I had the pleasure of opening for Wolfe at Jack Rabbit in Buffalo a couple summers ago, where much to my chagrin he and his band delivered a favorite Waits number of mine in "Telephone Call from Istanbul" off of his 1987 album, Franks Wild Years. Wolfe shares the natural vocal grit Waits possesses -- as if their diet consists solely of single malt scotch and cigarettes -- and is the closest modern musician I've heard to the legend himself.
This year's event will once again feature stage-side painting by Billy Martinez, and the music of Tom Waits performed by:
* Anana Kaye
* Anne McCue's Wild Years
* Rocky Bottom
* Brand New Trash
* Cory Branan
* East Kin
* Hannah Fairlight
* Kevin Gordon
* Luke Holden & The Petrol Scarecrows
* Sizzle Went the VCR
* Zac Young
All proceeds collected from the entry and silent auction art sale are donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.
A suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door. Please contribute what you can in support of the music and helping your neighbors fight hunger. The late Mary Sack is credited as the pioneer behind this event that continues to go strong.
Wolfe has his new single, "Invocation," due out Wednesday December 18th, 2024, which will be the first off of his upcoming album, OPHIUCHUS.
Step right up to The 5 Spot this Friday for a good cause and tango 'till they're sore.
