After playing a part in the cultural explosion that was the British Invasion in the 1960s, Billy J. Kramer is paying tribute to the era and one of its most important figures.
Premiering on what would've been John Lennon's 84th birthday on October 9th, 2024, the Lancashire, England, born Kramer released his music video and cover of Lennon's 1971 song, "Jealous Guy."
On his version of "Jealous Guy" -- which was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios -- Kramer offers a vocal performance that is languid and tender, singing over a light piano. Sonically, the cover bears much resemblance to Lennon's original version, paying homage to one of the iconic Beatle's most notable solo tracks, which is off of his Imagine album.
Sweet and soothing, Kramer croons over the classic chorus, "I didn't mean to hurt you / I'm sorry that I made you cry / I didn't want to hurt you / I'm just a jealous guy"
The track's music video was filmed live at Abbey Road Studios, featuring footage of Kramer and other musicians recording the cover. The video is simple and direct, giving us insight into the recording process at one of the most iconic studios in the world.
Born William Howard Ashton, the pop artist grew up in the suburbs of Liverpool. While performing at a local rock club, he caught the attention of Lennon, who after apparently seeing pop-idol potential in Kramer, helped him land a record deal with Beatles' manager Brian Epstein.
Kramer then went on tour with The Beatles as their opening act at the height of Beatlemania. He gained notoriety performing several songs written by Lennon and McCartney, with his first successful single being "Do You Want To Know A Secret" in 1963. He also served as the lead vocalist for British pop-rock group The Dakotas.
Kramer's cover of "Jealous Guy" pays tribute to one of the most pervasive voices in popular music and culture, keeping alive an all-important once-in-a-lifetime era. He is deemed as "An ambassador to rock's most important moment in history: The British Invasion," and in 2016, he released his autobiography aptly titled, Do You Want To Know A Secret.
