It's always exciting when musical artists join forces.
In this case, we find two artists from different backgrounds whose musical journeys have intersected, combining their talents to create a sound that touches the soul in a grittier fashion. Together, B.T. West and Ina East are making waves in the world of bluesy folk n' roots music as Gospel Lane Americana Division -- or G.L.A.D.
A student of well-known Americana artists like Big Boy Henry and Darrell Scott, West (vocalist, guitarist) spent much of his musical career split between the U.K. and the U.S. Native to Eastern Europe, East (vocalist and percussionist) has dabbled in both classical music studies and more traditional Eastern European folk music.
Now based in Germany, the duo has since directed their focus to the blues gospel and alt-folk scene.
G.L.A.D.'s latest project, a 5-song EP titled U-Turn, delivers an array of avant garde-type folk songs that are steeped in the storytelling tradition.
"Turn" kicks off the EP, with West's gritty vocals paired with a catchy acoustic guitar riff, conjuring images of desert roads and rough edges. The narrative is one about feeling like an outsider, even facing feelings of regret at venturing away from home and the life you once knew. This number sets the tone, establishing its unvarnished, live studio session atmosphere.
A stirring track about the season after WWII ended, "Winter of 46" tells a mournful story based on those of West's parents and their experience of a post-war world. East lends a sweet harmony with her gentle tones, adding depth to the chorus as his voice sets the gritty scene. This track brings a message of hope in the midst of despair and ruin, with luscious mandolin and violin accompaniment shining alongside the duo's earnest storytelling.
The closing track and bonus track, "Red Stain" is yet another tale of woe. Once again, West's gravelly vocals are sweetened by East's softer tones, offering an endearing juxtaposition. At the forefront of this number is the pain of loss and the strength needed to overcome.
G.L.A.D.'s latest project was released on November 1st, 2024 via Galley Tower Records, and was recorded at Florin Media Studios, Landau. It features Andreas Wäldele on mandolin and violin, as well as Mathis Wunderlich on drums.
Prior to U-Turn, G.L.A.D. released their debut EP, So Glad, in 2022.
