On the release of new single 'Bright Yellow' and ahead of live dates with Honeyblood, the future for Lazy Day looks bright indeed.
It's been a short while since Lazy Day's washed out, dreamscape-indie goodness has filled space on these pages. News of their long-awaited - coincidently as the sun-kissed days become more frequent - is a real treat. From 'Weird Cool' to 'With My Mind', the Lazy Day back catalogue is a joy to behold. We got in touch with the brainchild of Lazy Day, London-based songwriter Tilly Scantlebury to get the scoop on their return.
You've just released the expansive and colourful 'Bright Yellow', how does the track fit sonically within the new evolution of Lazy Day as a project?
"I've always loved big dynamic shifts when making Lazy Day songs, as well as telling a story from a particular point of view — and none of that has changed with Bright Yellow . But I think (hope) there's a difference in this new music: you can hear how much fun I had experimenting with new sounds — piano, synths, even a mouth solo. But perhaps the biggest evolution is simply that now I have a more focused lens. This spans into the songwriting, to playing almost all of the instruments and co-producing the track. I know what I want to say and what I want to make and I'm more determined than ever."
What new approach to Lazy Day as an artistic project do you feel you've gained from your research on queer representation, in terms of the message your music wishes to convey?
"I think it's a way of seeing the world and my place in it, understanding myself in a relational sense to both history and the future. Researching and teaching about queer and feminist political art also helps me feel like there's a sense of urgency to the act of making things myself. No time to lose! Other artists help me feel brave in that respect."
Alongside the new single, you announced your signing to Brace Yourself Records - in great company with HOH favourites and forward-thinking acts Flossing, Nuha Ruby Ra and Grandmas House - was there a sonic fit with their roster or ethos that you felt fitted the new Lazy Day material and direction?
"I think that the people who make up Brace Yourself Records have such a love for music. The music comes first with them, which has felt so rewarding when showing them what I've made and having their real belief in it. This new chapter of Lazy Day for me is so centred around good people, and I feel really lucky to be part of the BYR gang."
What can we expect from Lazy Day in 2024 in terms of live shows and releases?
"We're heading on a short tour with Honeyblood at the end of May, and we're gearing up for some other live announcements too. I've got almost an entirely new band playing with me now, and I'm so excited by their talent and energy — they bring this new set of songs together with so much joy. In terms of new music, there is so much more to come! Bright Yellow is just the start."
