| ahilt21 January 30 | Flutist Claire James has been selected by the faculty as the UNO School of Music's Outstanding Graduate Student for 2023-2024. Claire earned her Bachelor's degree studying with Sergio Pallottelli at Longy School of Music at Bard College in Boston, after which she moved to Omaha in 2022 to pursue a Masters degree in flute performance. Dr. Pettit, who supervises her work as the Music Theory graduate assistant, wrote of Claire: "She has been instrumental with student retention in the School of Music. She makes herself available to students having difficulty with music theory and helps them to develop study strategies to learn the material. Her tutoring is thoughtful and useable. I wish every GA I have had (or will have) is (was) like Claire." Her flute professor Dr. Beard wrote: "Claire is a true creative who has brought a new energy and life to the UNO flute studio. She is kind, supportive, and nurturing to her colleagues while inspiring them to think outside the box and explore creative possibilities. Her SoundBites project with chef Ben Slovak is one of her innovative ideas, combining music and food with research on how sounds can influence flavor. Miss James is an outstanding role model for the 21st century musician, demonstrating to everyone around her how they can build a career inspired by unique and individual passions, and by combining her interests in culture, music, food, and in helping others."
