The Walton-Verona class of '82 was pretty small, around 55, and I think that growing up we were overall aware of who had a birthday when. The vast majority of us were born in 1964, but a few joined the world prior to that (the earliest I can think of right now is mid-July of '63; another was born on the day of the Kennedy assassination). Of course it was much the same for my buds in the Transy class of '86.
This was less true for the folks I wound up hanging out with most during grad school. Two of my officemates were a few years older than I, and many from my bridge crowd had come to Illinois a year or two after I did (though my two best friends from that period were part of the '82/'86 bunch).
All of this is to say: a whole slew of people I've known decently well at various points in my life from those cohorts are (or in one important instance, would have been) soon to turn 60. This season starts in earnest today and will last for fourteen months--my own Big Day will occur at about the quarter-pole of the period. I'll be thinking about all these folks as we pass through this not-wholly-welcome milestone.
Anyway, happy birthday to my good friend Greg, who introduced me to so much great music throughout the 90s and beyond. In honor of the day, a tune he introduced to me during the first months we roomed together in the fall of '91. From Australia, it's Ratcat, with "That Ain't Bad."
