Dr. Jay Gilbert's edition of Lumir C. Havlicek's march "On the Big Blue" has been slated for performance by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band during the ensemble's 2023 national tour. "The President's Own" is one of the oldest and most respected musical institutions in the United States—established by an Act of Congress in 1798 signed by U.S. President John Adams. Dr. Gilbert serves as an Instructor of Graduate Conducting at UNO and was longtime Director of Bands at Doane University until his retirement in 2022.

Lumir C. Havlicek (1895-1969) was an accomplished composer, performer, and music educator—serving as the longtime band director in the Crete, Nebraska schools. Havlicek composed "On the Big Blue" in 1926 and dedicated it to the city of Crete, Nebraska. The march enjoyed great regional popularity in the second quarter of the 20th century. The title is derived from the Blue River, a 400-mile waterway that flows across eastern Nebraska through the city of Crete then southeast to Manhattan, Kansas, where it runs into the Kansas River. Program note by Alexa Thompson and Michael Coffey.
Dr. Gilbert completed this edition in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association in 2021.
