The artist known as Oddity has just released her latest official EP, "Oddisea Pt. II" with seven new songs that lead us through her 4-part epic, Oddisea. While part 1 successfully sets a cheery yet superficial scene, part 2 begins the descent into the darkness of the self, grappling with themes of questioning and transition. Exploring themes of the surreal, the existential, death and rebirth, our transfemme Chinese-American protagonist paints an impressionist portrait over a sonic backdrop of jazz and avant-garde. "Oddisea Pt. II '' continues to showcase Oddity's creative prowess and her willingness to be unabashedly honest in the most down to earth fashion that a listener could ever hope to experience.
Hailing from the East Bay, Oddity is a sonic storyteller seeking refuge in the intersections of jazz, hip-hop and neo-soul. With influences ranging from Billy Strayhorn to D'angelo, Oddity can be found wherever inspiration strikes - be it a tender touch on a warm rhodes, a heavy dilla-style backbeat, or a bluesy trombone melody. Oddity's story is one of resiliency and rebirth, of toeing the precipice of the abyss and returning with an open heart and a present mind. Her experience as a transgender woman of color is inextricably woven into the music: at once an affirmation of life, a tear-streaked lament, a desperate call to action. Asked to describe the overall theme of "Oddisea," Oddity writes, "These four parts culminate into a concept album that delves into my experience as an Asian-American trans woman, yet the story of having to shed old skin and be reborn is universal". Where Oddisea part I was about setting the scene, in part II we find ourselves going through Oddity's self discovery. As it progresses listener's will find themselves wading through the bleak and uncertain emotions leading to the hope and joy that Oddity found when finding herself. What's next? We'll just have to wait to see where the journey leads in the next two parts of Oddisea.
