Sofia Dragt is a Dutch cinematic singer, songwriter, and composer.
For her, being in nature in that way, with stones, water, and snow, all of which are fleeting and moving, provides her with an abundance of energy from both nature and the people with whom she interacts.
We had a quick conversation with Sofia, who provided us with some insight into her musical career and her most recent CD, Temporary Gold.
What is your real name? The same as my artist name, Sofia Dragt
What's your official Showbiz name? Sofia Dragt. I do use the name Roseval as an alias for instrumental music that I produce.
How did you get into music? I knew I wanted to get into music when I started to write my first song when I was twelve years old. After high school, I travelled for a year with a group called Up with People, with more than a hundred people from all over the world.
We had a show with music and dance and did community service in the different city's that we visited in a couple of states in the midwest of the US, Mexico and Thailand.
Then I went to study music and am now working as an artist but also as a composer and producer for film and media, for almost ten years already.
What field or genre are you into and how would you describe it? I would describe it as dream pop and cinematic folk indie.
What were your first project and the people you worked with and which year? I can't even remember, I've worked with so many people, but that must've been when I started studying music in 2008.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why? I get inspired by nature and by art-house films. The artist that inspires me is Olafur Arnalds, Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley and when I was just starting Regina Spektor and Patrick Watson.
Any models you look up to? With reason(s) why? Not really.
What do you look out for in this line of business? Create as much new music as possible! Though, only music that touches.
What are some of the challenges you face in your career path? When I put a lot of effort and love into a track, but it doesn't find the right people or audience that could listen to it, then it's challenging to keep releasing.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business? It's a perfect way to promote my music. Although there's a lot of new music, so it's pretty difficult to reach people, also cause it's very quick and transient, so it doesn't stick as good as it should.
Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters? Keep creating, make hours, record your own stuff so you'll get a good grip on your own sound. And also, listen to a lot of different music by others and collaborate with others.
What is your current project about? My current releases are written in Iceland while I was there as Artist in Residence for a month. So those songs are inspired by the area there.
What are your hobbies? As music and friends take most of my time, I do like to cook and fix stuff in the house.
What do you do aside from this profession? I compose and produce for film and media, work as an artist and also teach piano, singing, songwriting and producing. I don't have a profession other than in music. I'm very grateful for that!
What is one message you would give to your fans? Always bring good travel music with you, it makes the memories last longer.
