Lahis is a composer and performer located in Tel Aviv. Mine (2012) was her first release, a grungy studio album with a backing band produced by Yotam Ben Horin.

Lahis' unique approach to composing, along with the intimate nature of her voice, provides a distinct sound fingerprint that unites the many musical forms that populate her compositions.

In 2015, she relocated to Berlin, where she released Resonance (2017), a four-track acoustic EP that focuses on the guitar and voice as the basis of her music.

Lahis was on the lookout for a fresh sound after touring Europe and playing as an acoustic solo artist on the streets of Berlin. He collaborated with producer Assi Sender and began experimenting with electronic soundscapes. Berlin (2019) was their self-titled first song, a calm, rhythmic electro-pop melody performed in Hebrew.

What is your real name?
Dana Lahis

What's your official Showbiz name?
Lahis

How did you get into music?
I got into music like everyone else - as a listener. I was very immersed in it from a young age, turning the lights off in my room and singing. I liked feeling it intensely. Another love I had was words, and at some point, I got a guitar and managed to combine both.

One thing led to another - I got invited to play an acoustic show, then another one, then a band, then a different band, etc.

What field or genre are you into and how would you describe it?
Nowadays it's a pretty wide range of genres. Chill-wave, Down-tempo, Pop, Hip-Hop, Ambient, Electronic, Indie-rock… Depends on my mood.

What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
My first project was a Grunge-Pop band called 'My Lesbian Roommate'. It was back in 2005 with friends from my hometown, Haifa.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
People - I am very much of a social person, I take everything in. Especially people with a real sovereign/independent way of thinking. Running - Running became a big part of my life in the last few years, it helps me stay balanced and cheerful and keeps a healthy flow of energy in my psyche.

Music - Music is everyone's neverending battery and without it, we're all lost. Books - Books shaped my inner structure over the years, reading about really brave and wise people and their journeys.

Any models you look up to? With reason(s) why?
I don't know if I would call them models but I really like Oscar Wilde and Jack Kerouac. And from the living people, I really like Patti Smith. I love her poetic and gentle view of existence, her humble approach, and her strong presence. And Alejandro Jodorowsky.

What do you look out for in this line of business?
I don't really see my music as a business, for better or worse. But I would very much like it to be listened to.

What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
This relates to the answer above. It is hard for me that so many of the things that need to be done in order to get to people have absolutely nothing to do with music.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
This is a very big question. But from the emotional aspect - just the fact that you are interviewing me online now and we never met and will never get to meet, is brilliant but also sad.

And this is the essence of it - it is brilliant because everything is open and available and this is real magic sometimes. But it's sad because it somehow devalues everything too. We could talk about this for hours.

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
Yes, to focus on what matters, which is songwriting.

What is your current project about?
I am currently working on more music with my producer, Assi Sender. We are working remotely - He is in Berlin and I am in Tel-Aviv, so it is taking us longer. But some really good stuff is coming out.

What are your hobbies?
Drawing, reading, running, writing.

What do you do aside from this profession?
I am an A&R Artists Relations Agent at a company called Artlist.

What is one message you would give to your fans?
Mmmm… to make peace with yourself. First.
