The album's quick popularity astounded industry observers. The first track, "For the Love," peaked at #122 on the Global Top 200 digital radio chart and was heavily played on iHeart Radio, the country's largest radio broadcaster, throughout the United States. A second song, "Superman," was heard by almost 1.4 million people on digital radio. Willow's distribution agreement with leading industry companies MoodMedia, Umix, and ClubCom, which spread her music to play in over 580,000 retail in-store radio locations, including Hilton Hotels, McDonald's, and Subway, spanning 41 countries on six continents around the world, reaching from Norway to Brazil to India, Singapore, Russia, and South Africa, eventually became a global juggernaut, heard by millions of listeners.
Willow's much-awaited follow-up, Daybreak, was released in November 2021. Willow is in a quieter, more introspective tone on the six-song compilation of original tunes. As she says: "During the lockdown, I think we all went through periods of melancholy, and at these times I found myself looking more to my guitar than my piano for a creative outlet. I'd been listening to a lot of great country music and found the guitar and the storytelling framework of country songs to be a good match for expressing my musical ideas.
Willow's self-written songs for Daybreak drew an all-star cast of musicians eager to flesh out her melodies over a series of Nashville recording sessions, as she followed her musical inspiration on a journey away from pop toward a sound more anchored in the country. Smith Curry, who has performed and recorded with Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean, contributed his characteristic aching pedal steel tone. Craig Wilson, another Taylor Swift collaborator, offers evocative, melancholy guitar work.
Maggie Rogers' excellent keyboardist, enriches and twists the texture of the song. Last but not least, the album concludes with a magnificent remix of "Fade," the album's first song and single, mixed by Kyle Puccia, the brilliant co-writer and producer of Kygo's #1 smash "Kids in Love." Willow directed the album's production, which was subsequently mixed and mastered by a GRAMMY Award-winning crew. That's a really impressive company for an 18-year-old artist!
"I wrote many of these songs on the guitar during the lockdown phase of the pandemic. My songwriting mood was reflective, and I found the storytelling framework and melancholy sound of acoustic country music to be a perfect fit creatively. When it came time to record the songs, my dream was to follow through on the original inspiration for the music and bring it to life with country musicians. I feel incredibly lucky and humbled to have realised that dream by collaborating with an all-star cast of genius Nashville musicians whose past work with Taylor Swift and Maggie Rogers I so admire. They breathed all the colours of the morning into the tracks, supporting and lifting the lyrics into the perfect evocative sound. I hope you'll ride along with me on this musical journey into the light, into my daybreak."
